Additional loss of spatial detail is related to the geolocation error that affects the CGLS Sentinel-3-based products, due to the use of tie points instead of pixel-based geocoding during reprojection, and the fact that for BRDF normalization of TOC reflectances are accumulated over a certain period. This effect is also visible on the Sentinel-3 OLCI Level1B input data: it is the consequence of differences in ground sampling distance between PROBA-V (100m at nadir) and Sentinel-3/OLCI (300m at nadir). However, the NDVI V2 shows clearly less sharpness and spatial detail compared to NDVI V1. The Collection 300m NDVI V2, derived from Sentinel-3 OLCI observations, displays a good consistency with Collection 300m NDVI Version 1 derived from PROBA-V observations, as shown on the maps below. Furthermore, the comparison with other EO-derived NDVI products must be considered carefully since the NDVI is, by definition, sensor-dependent. At the opposite, since the NDVI is a mathematical index, the accuracy assessment comparing with ground measurements is not relevant. Therefore, the product completeness, the spatial, temporal and statistical consistencies are assessed. The validation procedure of NDVI follows as much as possible the CEOS LPV guidelines defined for the validation of LAI. The four narrow Red and three narrow NIR are averaged into a broad Red and NIR band, that are then used to calculate the NDVI.

Then 10-daily BRDF normalized reflectances are computed from 30 days of input reflectances.

Reflectances from Sentinel-3/OLCI, in seven Red and Near-infrared (NIR) bands are first atmospherically corrected.
